Review-Best Medical Marijuana Strain Insomnia

There are multiple factors that contribute to the soporific, or sleep-inducing, the effect of marijuana. One of which is how Indica-dominant the particular strain is.

Marijuana strains that favor Indica characteristics will, therefore, cause a much more predictable sleepy sensation which can be used to treat insomnia and sleep apnea.insomnia

Another factor to consider when searching for the best strains for sleep is the presence of the cannabinoid, cannabinol (CBN). CBN, known for promoting sleep, is a product of cannabis degeneration and can, therefore, be created by allowing your favorite strain to dry out a bit in the sun.

This will cause the THCa (which is usually converted to THC with heat) to transform into CBNa which will transform into CBN when it becomes heated.

Lab tests can help determine if a product contains CBN and to which degree. Using a process known as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, licensed testing facilities can determine exactly how much of each cannabinoid is present in a product and will often indicate the results online.

To find the best marijuana strains for sleep, you could, therefore, consult the most recent lab tests or rely on traditional go-to strains for sleep like Bubba Kush , BC God Bud ,White Rhino, and Granddaddy Purple.

Let`s check them out.

The Strains

Bubba Kush

Bubba Kush is an indica strain that has gained notoriety in the U.S. and beyond for its heavy tranquilizing effects. Sweet hashish flavors with subtle notes of chocolate and coffee come through on the exhale, delighting the palate as powerful relaxation takes over.bubba kush marijuana

From head to toe, muscles ease with heaviness as dreamy euphoria blankets the mind, crushing stress while coercing happy moods.

The Bubba Kush strain exhibits a distinctive, bulky bud structure with hues that range from forest green to pale purple.

Bubba Kush‘s stocky plant stature and bulky bud structure suggest Afghani descent, but its genetic origins aren’t certain.

The breeder whom this strain was named after states that it emerged just after 1996, when an OG Kush hybrid pollinated an unknown indica strain obtained in New Orleans.

The mother plant was supposedly Northern Lights, but the genetically ambiguous indica was simply called “Bubba.” Bubba Kush has flourished from its California roots ever since.

God Bud

God Bud, originally from Jordan of the Islands, is a longtime favorite of cash croppers and medicinal users alike, providing large, dense, purple tinged buds on short, compact plants with heavy branching.god bud marijuana

A mix of  Hawaiian, Purple Skunk, and the mysterious Canadian strain known only as “God,” this strain produces copious amounts of resin and an almost overwhelming musky-sweet smell.

God Bud is a potent indica-dominant hybrid that can give users an almost hallucinogenic high while tasting of tropical fruit with undertones of berry, lavender and pine.

This strain was also produced under the name BC God by Canadian outfit BC Bud Depot.

Flavours: Earthy, Pungent, Sweet

Effects: Relaxed, Happy, Euphoric, Sleepy, Uplifted

Medical: Stress, Depression, Pain, Insomnia, Inflammation

White Rhino

White Rhino strain is a hybrid of White Widow and an unknown North American indica strain, creating a bushy and stout plant. The buds give off a strong and heady high. The plant’s parentage hails from Afghanistan, Brazil, and India.white rhino marijuana

It is one of the best types of marijuana for medicinal use since it has such a high THC content.

Like many Indica dominant strains, this one should be used in the evening or at night and can be rather effective at treating insomnia.

The numbing effects on the body are sought after by patients suffering from chronic aches and pains.

Others choose the strain to relieve stress, anxiety, nausea, migraines and induce appetite.

Flavours: Earthy, Pungent, Woody

Effects: Relaxed, Happy, Euphoric, Uplifted, Sleepy

Medical: Stress, Pain, Insomnia, Depression, Lack of Appetite

Skywalker Kush

Skywalker Kush is a well-rounded indica-dominant hybrid that helps patients knock out pain and relax into sleep after a long day of battling the Dark Side.

Skywalker Kush was created by Amsterdam’s Dutch Passion Seeds to combine the sweet fruity aroma of Blueberry with the growing strengths of the hardy, high-yielding Mazar.

Great for indoor growing, these plants will stay shorter and bushy, flowering in 8 to 9 weeks.

Grand Daddy Purple

Introduced in 2003 by Ken Estes, Grand Daddy Purple (or GDP) is a famous indica cross between Purple Urkle and Big Bud. grand daddy purple

This California staple inherits a complex grape and berry aroma from its Purple Urkle parent, while Big Bud passes on its oversized, compact bud structure. GDP flowers bloom in shades of deep purple, a contrastive backdrop for its snow-like dusting of white crystal resin.

Its potent psychoactive effects are clearly detectable in both mind and body, delivering a fusion of cerebral euphoria and physical relaxation.

While your thoughts may float in a dreamy buzz, your body is more likely to find itself fixed in one spot for the duration of GDP’s effects.

Like most heavy indica varieties, Grand Daddy Purple is typically pulled off the shelf to treat pain, stress, insomnia, appetite loss, and muscle spasms. GDP blesses growers with massive commercial yields which are ready for harvest following a 60 day flowering time indoors.

Medical Uses: Stress, Insomnia, Pain, Depression, Lack of Appetite

Finally I find a site I can relate to, sleep problems plague me terribly and since finding medical marijuana I’ve been able to sleep a few more hours each night at least. I can testify to the fact that indica’s are the way to go for good deep sleep. I like the page and I must say I love the Skywalker strain, I’ve had it before and it works amazing for killing the days pain and nodding off to sleep.

      Thanks for your comment Kyra
I have used Skywalker as well, and found the same thing. A nice relax with calming effects, then drift off to sleep and am able to sleep well. I would rather do this than the countless array of sleep aids in the form of medication, which can become very habit forming.

Fantastic article I found this to be a great read and I like how you provided an in depth look into the strains and their properties.
This information should be useful for patients seeking natural relief from insomnia great stuff.
I noticed one hybrid and the others were all indica are there sativa strains that help insomnia as well?

Thanks for the comment Earl. Indicas tend to treat insomnia most effectively. Sativa strains can have an “upper” effect on some, making it more difficult to sleep. Some theories say this is due to differences in chemical makeup. Edibles can help you stay asleep longer if you have not tried them before. I find that when I take an edible, it makes me very sleepy and relaxed, which has given me a good nights sleep as well.

This is a really interesting article! – I have heard of marijuana to treat insomnia before and wanted to know how best to take it – would you smoke it or can you take it as an oil like you would with pain? Also would the effects be instant? The hunger effects puts me off although God Bud and White Rhino don’t seem to have that effect! Thanks for an informative read.

Hi Teresa and thanks for the comment. Smoking or vaping will give the fastest reaction for sure. Since some people do not like to smoke, CBD or THC oils as well as edibles with high THC content will give you the same effect, but they take longer to kick in as they have to be adsorbed by your body which takes time. Edibles offer a great sleep, and will last longer in your system.
